Thank you for enrolling in the SMART-r study! We are grateful to have you as part of our research project.
Keep this website link for your records and refer back to it as needed throughout the study. You can also review study information and FAQs here: SMART-r Study Information and FAQs
Please Note: Some of the SMART-r studies include a study mobile app, called AWARE. Some of the SMART-r studies do not. If you are in a study with NO app, the app information will not apply to you and your participation.
SMART-r Studies with AWARE Smartphone App:
After you download the app [instructions for app download HERE], you will receive a text to take the Baseline survey. This online survey should take about 20-30 minutes to complete. Once we verify your eligibility, will be paid $20 for completion of the baseline survey and the installation of the TTRU-AWARE app. It may take up to 5 business days to receive payment via email from Capital Consulting Corporation.
Smart-r Studies with NO AWARE Smartphone App:
After you complete the Baseline survey, you will not have any additional steps on the first day of the study. All other study procedures begin the next day. Once your eligibility has been verified, you will be paid $20 for completion of the enrollment steps. It may take up to 5 business days to receive the payment via email from Capital Consulting Corporation.
All Studies
Daily Survey
Each day, you will receive an automated text message at 5pm local time to complete an online survey. The survey will take about 5 minutes to complete. The survey will be open from 5pm-2am each day. You will earn $1 for each daily survey completed.
Notes for the Daily Survey:
Note 1: For the first week or so, there are a few extra questions added to the daily survey. These extra questions end after the first 7-10 days.
Note 2: Please close out the browser when you finish the survey!! If you leave the browser window open, that browser will refresh the next day, and we won’t be able to see that you completed the correct survey (instead it will look like you completed the same day’s survey twice).
Note 3: If you complete the survey and refresh the page to confirm we have it marked complete...this will not work, unfortunately. If you refresh the page, you will be able to complete the survey again. Rest assured, if you completed the survey - we have it. If you are nervous, feel free to confirm with us at smartrstudy@nih.gov.
Why no confirmation message? You complete the same survey 1x per week (Monday, Tuesday, etc.). In order to do this, you must be allowed to complete the survey "multiple times."" As a result - you will not be 'locked out' of the survey after completing it, and you won't receive a message that we have recorded your submission. The only thing we are able to do, is lock the survey after 2am.
Note 4: This phone number sends automated messages only. If you reply to a text, we will not see it. If you need to contact us, email smartrstudy@nih.gov.
Chatbot
Beginning the day after you enroll, you will begin to receive text messages from our study chatbot. These messages will come from a different phone number than the online surveys.
You will receive a text from the chatbot every morning, afternoon, and evening. You can chat with the chatbot as much as you would like, however you are only required to interact with the chatbot at least once per day, in a meaningful way. This means saying more than 'yes' or 'okay'. Properly respond to at least one of the questions asked each day to qualify for payment.
The chatbot will always send a response, so if you want to end the conversation, you can simply not respond, or say 'bye'. Then, the chatbot will text you a new question during the next timeframe (morning, afternoon, or evening).
We wanted to provide enough questions to help remind you to engage with the chatbot every day, but we don't want you to feel like you must respond to every question. Just answer at least 1 question per day.
*IMPORTANT* Don't respond 'STOP' unless you would like to unenroll from the study. When you respond 'stop', you will automatically be unenrolled from the chatbot. If you say 'stop' by accident, you can say 'START' to be able to receive texts again. Why? It is the law that an automated text platform must stop sending text messages when a person responds 'STOP' (or 'stop').
Notes about the Chatbot:
Note 1: If you are texting with the chatbot, and the time comes for the next prompt (e.g., afternoon or evening time) you may get that text in the middle of your conversation. It could be a little confusing for you. You can continue your previous conversation, or choose to respond to the new prompted question. It’s up to you.
Note 2: Our chatbot is not being monitored in real time. If you need help or assistance with the study, please contact the study team at smartrstudy@nih.gov.
Note 3: We cannot guarantee privacy when you are texting with the chatbot on your phone. Do not text the chatbot information you would not normally text someone else on your phone. Please enable passcode protection and/or biometric login security to protect your information
Note 4: This is a research study. Our chatbot may not have the perfect responses, and it may act a bit strange from time-to-time. If you notice anything you'd like to share with the study team - please let us know at smartrstudy@nih.gov.
