NIDA SMART-r Study: Instructions and Study Information

TTRU-AWARE Installation and Registration

Please review the following step-by-step instructions for installing AWARE.

Instructions

1. Download TTRU-AWARE APK Installer

  1. 1.1 You will receive an SMS with a link to download the AWARE app and enroll in the study. Click on the link.
  2. 1.2 The link will take you to the browser which might ask for confirmation to download. If it does please click on Confirm. Once the file is downloaded then click on Open. If you missed this pop up you can find the downloaded APK in the Files Manager App -> Downloads.
  3. 1.3 You should now see a pop up for AWARE Downloader, please click on Install.
  4. 1.4 If there is a pop up that AWARE Downloader might be harmful, please click on More details. If you did not see this pop up continue with the next step.
  5. 1.5 You should now see the option to Install anyway, please click that.
  6. 1.6 AWARE Downloader should now be installed, to continue click on Open to open the App. If you missed this pop up, you can find AWARE Downloader listed in All Apps.
  7. 1.7 You should now see the home page for the AWARE Downloader App.

2. Installing the TTRU-AWARE App

  1. 2.1 From the home page of the AWARE Downloader App, click on the DOWNLOAD AWARE button.
  2. 2.2 There will be a pop up prompting you to enable installing from source. Please click on Settings.
  3. 2.3 In the Settings page, make sure that Allow permission is enabled.
  4. 2.4 There will be a pop up asking the user for confirmation. Please click on Install to continue.
  5. 2.5 You should now be at the home page of the AWARE App. If you were not automatically redirected you can find the AWARE App listed in All Apps.

3. Registering for the study in the TTRU-AWARE App

  1. 3.1 Click on the AWARE APK to open the app. At the home page click on the button GO TO TEXT MESSAGES.
  2. 3.2 Open the SMS you received from the AWARE study. Click on the enrollment link, this redirects you back to the AWARE app.
  3. 3.3 Wait a few seconds for the app to load. When the app asks to perform an eligibility check on your device click on OK.
  4. 3.4 The app is going to request access for SMS and few other permissions which are required to be part of the study. Please agree to grant access to all the permission to be enrolled in the study.
  5. 3.5 You will see a message that You passed!.
  6. 3.6 When granting permissions for Location, ensure that you select the option for Precise, then click on While using the app.
  7. 3.7 For all other permission click on Allow or While using the App.
  8. 3.8 If a pop-up requests permission to run AWARE in the background and stop optimizing battery usage click on Allow.
  9. 3.9 If you get a pop-up asking to turn on Accessibility access click on Settings to continue.
  10. 3.10 This brings up the Accessibility settings for your device. Scroll down and click on Installed apps.
  11. 3.11 If the AWARE option has Off under it, please click on AWARE.
  12. 3.12 Once inside the accessibility settings for AWARE click on the Off slider, which shows a pop-up requesting confirmation. Click on Allow.
  13. 3.13 Click on the back button till you get to the study home page, which now shows an button to join study. Click on the button to Join Study.
  14. 3.14 You should see a message that Registration successful!. Click on OK. You are now enrolled in the study!
